Piper's Phantasmagorical Photography Artworks
Ok, so first question you probably have: “What is this and why do I care?” The simple answer? I want to create photographic art that creates an emotional or visceral reaction that stays with you. Hopefully, it stays with you enough that you want to see it on your wall each day!
So who am i? My name is Michael Piper and I'd like to welcome you to P3 Artworks, a San Antonio based photography service. In reality, that's not the business name. It's actually Piper’s Phantasmagorical Photographic Artworks. I don’t do portraits. Not like you see on craig’s list or the yellow pages. I do art that starts as a photograph that I then edit, composite, and artistically change to create the final result for your enjoyment.
Now, let me tell you a little bit about me and how I got started doing this. I am a professionally trained Graphic Artist. I have 20 years of professional graphics experience creating memorable, eye-catching, and visually appealing imagery. So, when I do a photography session, you aren't getting a person who points a camera, takes a pretty photograph and then does minor post processing. Instead, you are getting a photograph that is then processed with the skill and technique of a fine artist.
Back in the 1970s, my father was a hobbyist photographer who shot black & white film. He did his own developing and printing with an in-home darkroom. As he started experimenting with double exposures, light drawing, and other special effects (all done in-camera back then), I became his subject / assistant and found I enjoyed seeing what the final image looked like. Learning how to dodge and burn with an enlarger was the start of my fascination with image manipulation. I was about 10 at the time. In the late 1990's I discovered the Adobe Software suite and started learning Photoshop. Over time, I began creating custom images, graphics and illustrations in the corporate world. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication (Specializing in Graphic Design). I'm also a long time member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals), now known as KelbyOne. I also have been the graphic artist restoring all the covers for the Sanctum Press reprints of the Classic 1930's and 1940's Pulp Magazines. These include over 70 issues of "The Shadow", over 65 issues of "Doc Savage", multiple issues of "The Avenger," "The Phantom Detective," "Nick Carter," and "The Whisperer."
My goal isn't to take a simple photograph. It is to use lighting, location, mood and artistic techniques to create a visual representation of what I see and feel is the best about the subject of my artwork.
